Self Care 101: It's Essential

True or False? Self-care is important for your overall health.

I think we all know the answer is TRUE, but despite us all knowing what our bodies need, we push our health to the side. Why?

Taking care of yourself is just as important to your physical body as it is to your mind. Without self-care, you'll start to see other parts of your life unravel: your relationships, your career, and even your overall motivation in life. Practicing self-care can also set great examples for your friends and family too. When they see you start to flourish because you took the time to set up functional boundaries with them to improve your health, they'll want to start practicing their own self-care routines too.

Self-Care Myths:

1. "It's too expensive."

When most people consider self-care options they tend to assume its too costly with therapists, expensive diets, and monthly gym memberships. What people forget is that TRUE self-care doesn't have to cost a penny!

2. "It's selfish."

In today's ever-busy world of running in circles working full time while also trying to maintain a social life with friends/family, get 8 hours of sleep, and eat healthily... How can you possibly squeeze in the time to just focus on you and take care of your mental and physical health? Self-care is NOT SELFISH! You need to take the time to love yourself as much as you love your friends and family. Self-care makes you more effective and energetic. Feeling good inside improves your spirit and gives you the energy to take on those daunting days that feel like they'll never end. There's no need to feel guilty if your body needs a resting day.

Self-Care Ideas:

  • Practice Mindfulness
    • Notice your senses: sight, smell, taste, hear, touch
    • Focus on your breathing fully
    • Allow thoughts to come up, avoid judging them, refocus as you can
    • Let go of any negative thoughts about yourself/experience
  • Take a short nap (15-20 minutes) 
  • Take a dance/art/beginner yoga class. Whatever excites you!
  • Meditate
  • Disconnect from all devices (socials, phones, computers)
  • Praise yourself when you are great!
  • Eat a good meal
  • Take a really long bath/shower and appreciate the water
  • Declutter your closet/dressers
  • Help a stranger - whatever they need
  • Go to the dog park and play with the pups
  • Volunteer your time - wherever you want!

Whatever you decide to do for your personal self-care routine, just know it takes time for the "guilt" of loving yourself to pass. There will always feel like there's something more important that has to be done, but what could possibly be more important than taking care of your physical and emotional health? Don't allow our society of the overly busy make you feel guilty for loving yourself. You deserve a few moments to practice self-care. Your physical and mental health are depending on it!
